The people were dissatisfied with British rule in the 1870s and 1880s due to following reasons: (i) The dissatisfaction with British rule intensified in 1870s and 1880s. (ii) The Arms Act was passed in 1878, disallowing Indians from possessing arms.
1)Improverishment of the cultivators
the farmer suffer due to high revenue imposed on them the British took a large portion of their produce even when the crops fail they were forced to pay the land revenue by borrowing money from money lender when they were not able to pay back the loan their land was taken by the money lenders.
2) Ruin of trade and handicrafts
The artisan and craft men were ruined by unaffair competition from the machinemachine made goods imported from Britain which where much cheaper than the handmade goods.
3) Loss of livelihood
Since the ruling class no longer enjoyed power, royal patronage could not be extended to craftman ,religious and culture people like farmer ,poet and musician in this many more people in society lost their livelihood.
4)The drain of Wealth
The drain of India's wealth by British in many ways was also very much resented by the Indians. This was also a main cause which inspired the national movement to a large extent .
Economic Causes: The British crippled Indian trade and created a high tariff wall in Britain against Indian goods and encouraged the imports of British goods to India. They purchased raw materials from India and manufactured goods were sent back to India making enormous profit. The demand for Indian goods were reduced and handloom industry was adversely affected. Thousands of craftsmen and artisans were thrown out of employment. The manufacturing units of Dacca, Murshidabad and Surat became desolate, even the Indian iron and smelting industry was practically stamped out by cheap imported iron and steel for railways. A new plantation system introduced in 1833 brought incalculable misery for the peasants. The hardest hit were the peasants of Indigo plantation in Bengal and Bihar. The new changes in the agrarian system and exorbitant land revenue impoverished the peasants. Unemployment among the people was widely revalent. Government took away tax free lands. Monopolization of jute, tea and coffee industry took place. Zamindars and Taluqdars were displaced.
